Arsenal to promote Francis Cagigao to set aside interest of top European teams

Francis Cagigao

Arsenal are reportedly considering Francis Cagigao for the role of sporting director.
The Spaniard is currently the club’s head of international recruitment and is credited for the signings of Alexis Sanchez and Hector Bellerin from Barcelona, as well as Santi Cazorla from Malaga.
Cagigao was also involved in Cesc Fabregas’ move from Catalonia to north London in 2003 and it is believed that he’s been close to manager Arsene Wenger ever since.
Top teams across Europe, including ones from within the Premier League, are thought to be interested in Cagigao whose contract at Arsenal expires in 2020.

As reported by the Evening Standard, the Gunners are planning on restructuring their boardroom set-up at the end of the season and this would involve the appointment of a ‘senior figure’ to work alongside the manager and take responsibility for recruitment.
Former Arsenal winger and current sporting director at Ajax, Marc Overmars, is also in contention for the position.
This change is expected to occur even if Wenger leaves the Emirates at the end of the season, having faced months of fierce criticism from a section of supporters.
